Morocco’s cultural capital Fes is like stepping back to the times of Aladdin. It is a living storybook—one where the past and present intertwine in an enchanting dance of history, scents, and sounds. This ancient Moroccan city, with its maze-like medina and centuries-old traditions, is a place where time seems to stand still.
A Labyrinth of Wonders
Fes is home to the world’s largest car-free urban area—the medina, an intricate network of over 9,500 laneways and alleyways. It’s the most well-preserved medina in the Arab world, and the moment you step inside, you’re swept into a whirlwind of sensory experiences.
Our first visit to Fes 5 years ago was nothing short of breathtaking. The city’s exotic charm envelopes you as you wonder through its narrow, winding passageways. The air is thick with the heady scent of spices, the rhythmic clang of artisans hammering away at their craft, and the occasional bray of a donkey expertly maneuvering through the crowds. Every turn reveals a new wonder—souks overflowing with colorful textiles and spices, ancient doorways adorned with intricate tilework, and shopkeepers greeting us with warm smiles.

Living History at Every Turn
At the heart of Fes lies Al Quaraouiyine University, the world’s oldest continually operating university. This iconic institution pulses with scholarly energy, blending seamlessly with the city’s daily hustle and bustle. Nearby, the famous Chouara Tanneries offer a striking (and pungent!) glimpse into the centuries-old art of leather-making. The sight of craftsmen dyeing hides in vast stone vats of rich, earthy colors is both mesmerizing and humbling. It’s also the perfect place to pick up high-quality leather goods—one of Fes’ most prized exports.

The Warmth of Fes
One of the things we cherish the most about Fes is the warmth of its people. Locals greet you like old friends, always ready to share a story or help you find our way through the medina’s labyrinthine streets. From the butchers who make sure you never got lost, to the oud perfume vendors offering intoxicating scents—these small interactions add layers of depth to your experience.

Nights of Pure Enchantment
At sunset Fes takes on an entirely different kind of magic. From rooftop terraces, you can watch the city bathed in golden light, minarets glowing against the twilight sky. You have to experience the hauntingly beautiful call to prayer, echoing across the rooftops. It will give you goosebumps.
And then there are the riads—hidden gems of pure opulence. Behind unassuming doors, there are dazzling courtyards adorned with intricate mosaics, grand archways, and trickling fountains. Staying in a riad feels like being transported to a different era—one where craftsmanship and elegance reigned supreme.
Fes is more than just a destination; it’s an experience that lingers long after you leave. It’s a place of timeless beauty, where every corner tells a story, and every moment feels like a step through history. Of all the places we’ve explored in Morocco, Fes remains one of our absolute favorites—a city that stole our hearts. A place we have returned to over and over again. A city that truly captures the magic of the past and the soul of Morocco.
